In an effort to expand my palate and reduce dairy in my diet, I began a personal research project to find dairy-free alternatives to my favorite foods. As someone who is lactose-intolerant, I realized that taking pills to help me digest dairy is, while safe, not how to want to live my life. I wondered if it was possible to find tasty alternatives to my favorite foods. For example, I LOVE butter! Honestly, who doesn’t love butter? I tried several “buttery spreads” and other products that claim to taste just like the real thing. I found one brand that would pass the blind taste test and actually tasted BETTER than real butter! Plus it has the same texture and feel as butter!
Earth Balance has an incredible variety of buttery spreads, including a soy-free option (which happens to be my personal favorite). I use it just like real butter, spreading it on toast, smearing it on corn on the cob, drizzling it over veggies, and even using it when I saute my favorite veggies and chicken. Earth Balance also making dairy-free baking sticks if you feel inclined to bake. I never feel inclined to bake. A friend used the baking sticks to make brownies, and they were yummy in my tummy
Regular butter has about 102 calories per tablespoon, and Earth Balance buttery spreads clock in with the same number of calories. The Whipped and Soy Garden spreads clock in at 80 calories per tablespoon. So, you are not trading in butter for a high calorie alternative.
