Women Who Reign: Anat Gilboa

If you can’t go straight ahead, you go around the corner.” – Cher

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I grew up speaking four languages interchangeably at home and can safely say that I’m only fluent in one—English. I’m also kind of sarcastic, so heads up for any future interactions. During the summer between 8th and 9th grade, I taught myself Korean as a result of binge-watching Korean dramas, but have since passed that phase of my life. I initially intended to study linguistics and cognitive science in university, but ended up falling in love with computer science and mathematics. I am just now revisiting my interest in languages and hope to continue for a while 🙂

What # would define your life journey?
Having played the hashtag game many times in less conventional ways—camelCase or go home—on random ramblings, I’d say one of my initial favorites is #aintNobodyGotTimeForThat. I’d say it resonates with my life journey pretty well—I don’t like wasting time on things I don’t value. Which doesn’t mean that I don’t like working on hard problems because they take some time to solve; I just have to find value in them. 🙂

Favorite website / app:
For a while it’s been Twitter. I think it has changed the face of the internet and has power to do great things in developing countries. For me, it serves as a news outlet from trusted sources, a communication platform for those I look up to, and a blank slate for me to say whatever is on my mind. As such, it’s got a high bar to live up to and I have no doubt that the folks there are working hard to make it the best product it can be.

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted (if any):
I could go off on a list of inspiring people you’ve probably heard of, but I’d like to recognize my parents as two of the most inspiring people I’ve known. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up listening to how they faced some of their challenges in life. While I don’t have a particular quote to attribute their lessons to, I think one motto they live their lives by is “staying true to themselves.”

Song that makes you want to dance:
Abba’s Dancing Queen – I’ve been dancing to that since 1993 like nobody’s business.

Technical challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
I suppose I face technical challenges every day—be it on an architectural level for a personal project or a seemingly simple bug-fix in the production app I work on. Recently I had to recreate a bug that was thought to be client-side, but it ended up being server-side. I convinced myself that I would find it in our iOS codebase and fix the problem; however, after asking our backend folks to take a look at it after some time, the answer was that it was clearly in their codebase. Had I communicated my initial doubt of the bug’s location, I would have saved a bunch of time. Over communication cannot be emphasized enough as an understatement.

Ideal Job:
Where do I begin?! I don’t think I have an “ideal job” per se. I love computer science and am intrigued by the power of software engineering for mobile so what I’m doing now is pretty ideal! I’ve got occupations and lifestyles I have always want to try out, too, though— one of which – a neologism that has gained a lot of traction recently – is that of a “digital nomad.” I have always been interested in traveling, but have never lived out of a suitcase for an extended period of time—I just don’t know where I’ll put all of my shoes.

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
You’ll hear a lot of advice about how to live your life from people you admire, but no one knows you more than you do. While you might have dreams to be the “Best in X,” there’s no single correct path that will get you there. Find it in yourself to be intrinsically motivated to get up and do what you do every day. While competition is healthy and often times stimulating, you should strive to understand that comparing yourself to others should not be your main source of drive. Your goals should reflect how you intend to be a better version of yourself. Your life will be filled with challenges that test your strengths and weaknesses in all facets, and the best you can do is to figure out how to work on those.
