“I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” — Estée Lauder
Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
Hey to whoever is reading this! My name is Angel, I was born and raised in the Bay Area and I’m currently a junior at University of California, Berkeley studying Cognitive Science and Computer Science. I have two dogs named Simba and Bailey, they are two of the most loved and spoiled dogs you will ever meet! I have a passion for teaching and helping people and I’m very interested in Computer Science Education. A fun fact about me would be that I really enjoy practicing yoga, a new hobby of mine; I find that it is a great workout and good for discipline.
What # would define your life journey?
Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
Someone who inspires me would be my mother, Denise. she inspires me because she is an amazing woman who has always supported me and my siblings no matter what. She is also a woman who has overcome a lot of obstacles in her life and with that the knowledge that she has imparted onto me would be to always persevere through whatever life throws at you!
Song that makes you want to dance:
A song that makes me want to dance would be any song by Emily King, specifically Believer, Good Friends, or The Switch!
Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
As a first generation college student, I had no idea what Computer Science was before I entered college, unlike many of my peers who had many years of experience before college. I was told left and right by mentors, major advisors etc. that maybe I should not pursue Computer Science because I was not performing at the level of my peers. Not knowing anything about who I am as a person, that I’m strong, driven, and talented, they simply told me to give up my dream. Today, that is not the case; I’m still pursuing Computer Science because I did not let what other people told me about myself to get in the way of my dreams and passions.
My ideal job would be a job that involves teaching, Computer Science, and being challenged and pushed out of my comfort zone on a daily basis. In 10 years, I hope to have established my career already working with people who are as passionate about Education and Computer Science as I am. I hope to have started my own company by then that would help or support in some way closing the gender and racial gaps in the tech industry, but by then hopefully my services won’t be as needed as they are now because although this field needs a lot of help in with diversity, hopefully it would have gotten its act together by then!
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Knowledge that I would impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives would be to not let anyone define who you are except yourself. Every single day women are told they are so many things that they aren’t, like inferior, incapable, not beautiful, stupid, and the list goes on and on. We are told this by the media, by family, and sometimes even by friends so often that we start to internalize these things which can make a person think that they really are inferior, incapable, etc. But let me tell you something, you are amazing and everyone is unique and should be different because no one is the same. No one’s opinion of you matters but your own so don’t let what anyone says about you effect the power you have inside of you to be amazing, shine bright, and REIGN!
