Women Who Reign: Larissa Ho

“My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.” — Oprah Winfrey

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
While Seattle will always be home to me, I am currently abroad for the summer in Freiburg, Germany as a research intern for the Autonomous Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the local university. Not only have I been able to contribute to cutting edge research in robotics, but have also gotten the opportunity to fully diverge into the German culture and explore other parts of Europe. In the fall I will be starting my sophomore year at the University of Washington studying computer science. When I’m not buried in my textbooks, I enjoy snowboarding during the winter, traveling to experience new cultures, and cheering on the Seattle Seahawks with my family on Sunday game days.

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
My mom is truly my biggest inspiration. She has been my number one support system since day one and I am beyond thankful to have her as a role model in my life. Her positive attitude, dedication, passion, and unconditional love is contagious.

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
I went to a very diverse school growing up and was first introduced to computer science in a very diverse setting through the company’s attempt to draw in more females and minorities. One summer I attended a one week coding camp and the fact that I was the only non-white student and one of the two girls in the C++ class was a hard pill to swallow. Summer dresses and flora prints are definitely my thing so being in a room that was majority male made me question if I even belonged. After discussing this challenge with some teachers when the school year came around, I realized that I shouldn’t let this stop me from pursuing what I am truly passionate about. This experience only made me stronger and prouder to be a women in tech.
