“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” – Rosalynn Carter
Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I’m a high school senior in Bethesda, Maryland and I started the 3D Printing and Computer Programming Club at my school in my freshman year.
What # would define your life journey?
Favorite website / app:
Spotify! I would definitely recommend getting a premium account. You get even the first 3 months for 99 cents and then get a discounted price if you’re a student after that! It has all the music I could possibly want and for any mood I’m in.
Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
Ada Lovelace is my go to power lady. She wrote what is now known as the first computer program. While I unfortunately never had the chance to know her personally she has one quote that really speaks to me and that is “I never am really satisfied that I understand anything; because, understand it well as I may, my comprehension can only be an infinitesimal fraction of all I want to understand.” Her knowledge & hungry attitude keeps me motivated and inspired especially when the work I am doing is difficult or tiring.
Song that makes you want to dance:
I’m Good by The Mowgli’s
Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
I’ve always been a vocal advocate for women’s confidence and the necessity of speaking up when you face harassment or sexism as a woman in a STEM field. It wasn’t till I got my first internship that I understood how casually rude comments from male coworkers can come. It was easier to ignore at first, but they kept coming and I couldn’t take it anymore. However, bringing it up to a supervisor requires just the confidence I was preaching about before and could no longer find in myself. I ended up bringing it to my coworker’s attention multiple times. Eventually the comments stopped and I could have more positive interactions with him. I went into this job with all the optimism in the world, and I came out knowing what the real work place is like as well as equipped with a stronger set of armor for the inevitable next time.
I would like to be a Product Manager at a tech company. I love computer science, business, and design and being a PM is just the perfect job for me. Eventually I want to work at Google and be the CEO (but don’t tell Sundar Pichai!)
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Ask questions! People genuinely love teaching other people new things. Think about it! If a coworker or friend came up to you and asked for help, wouldn’t you love to bestow new knowledge upon them? To this end, don’t be afraid to ask others for help when you don’t understand something. Communities and environments become stronger when people support one another and that begins with asking for help when you need it.
