Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
Hello — I’m Evelyn!  I am currently a senior at Amherst College, majoring in Computer Science.  I recently have become interested in data science, and especially its potential role in the field of social good.  I enjoy understanding how other people think, and I also love seeing how my work impacts others.

Fun Fact: This summer, I became a big fan of what I call “third-wave ice-cream.” Basically, this is “third-wave coffee” in ice-cream form (yummy goodness created in small batches according to the customer’s order).

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
A friend I made this summer, Sudeep Agarwal, restructured the framework of my thinking around “talent” completely.  If we see talent as innate, we will never get better.  However, if we see talent as something that increases in relation to practiced hard work, we will be able to accomplish so much more.

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
My college, similar to many colleges, does not teach technical skills.  When I was a sophomore, I did not know any other women around me who worked on coding projects in their free time or even had the technical skills to do so.  The summer before, I had taught myself HTML and CSS by building a website from scratch.  The winter of my sophomore year, I made my first web app.  I remember it took me three days of struggle just to understand how to download everything I needed for the app.  However, it felt wonderful to finally be building something and learning how to build something myself.

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Throw yourself into every exciting opportunity that comes your way.  I have regretted times when I have hesitated to apply for something I wanted, or have been too scared to fail or waste my time.  And not just for coding — travel and talk to strangers, read something outside of your intellectual comfort zone, email your role models, and know that you are worth it.
