Women Who Reign: Harshita Arora

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” by Steve Jobs

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I am a 16-year-old programmer, entrepreneur, and app developer and designer! I’ve designed and developed apps, including an app called Universeaty at a summer program at MIT. I am currently working on a cryptocurrency price tracking, alerts, and portfolio management app. I plan on launching it on 21st January, 2018.

Fun fact about me: I travelled around 6 different states in the US for 3 months in 2017 all alone when I was 15, exploring and learning lots!

What # would define your life journey?
#entrepreneur, #techentrepreneur, #youngentrepreneur, #appdeveloper, #appdesigner

Favorite website / app:
I absolutely love Quora.com. I’ve been part of the community for 2 years now. I have learnt tons and shared my knowledge. My answers have gotten over 120k views and I have over 650 followers! I love Product Hunt as well.

Other apps that help me a lot are productivity tools by Google.

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
Patrick and John Collison. The Collison brothers inspire me because I can see this young passionate programmer and entrepreneur in me building a great product like Stripe, defying stereotypes about starting a business only when you’re in your late 30s.

They have talked quite a bit about building a product-centric startup. And that knowledge is pretty helpful!

Song that makes you want to dance:
“Try everything” by Shakira!

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
A life challenge I’ve always faced is a lack of resources in the small town in India where I live. I don’t have access to libraries, in-person mentorship from experts, good universities, etc. All I have is an Internet connection with my laptop – which has enabled me to self-teach myself and go on to do some awesome things!

Ideal Job:
My ideal job would be being the CEO of my startup(s). I am much more of a product manager than a programmer. I like to analyse, decide, and communicate higher-level things and manage people to achieve those goals and succeed at business.

1.1 Main Interface_iphone7silver_portrait - Harshita AroraWhat are your long-term and short-term goals?
My long-term goal would be keep building great products that solve market gaps and needs.
My short-term goal for now is to develop, test, and market my app, Crypto Price Tracker all within the next one month. After this project, I hope to explore more opportunities in cryptocurrencies, like arbitrage bots.
Or I might be building something in Personal Health and Wellness for the 2017-18 Paradigm challenge.

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
I want to tell every woman out there that they should learn to program and acquire technical skills and try to build something great that solves a market need. Doing so will open doors to a number of opportunities!
