Women Who Reign: Nicole Archambault

“The most important thing you can do in your time on this planet is overcome your fears. As early as possible. Learn to be brave, to ask questions, to stand firm in the face of the challenges you will inevitably face while doing powerful, important things.” – Nicole Archambault

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I’m Nicole, and I am a front-end web developer and educational technology entrepreneur. I’m a proud Black and Native American woman, and the first female technologist in my family. Born and raised in Massachusetts, I attended Wellesley College and although I started with a Computer Science degree… I was encouraged to change majors when I didn’t respond well to the curriculum.

After years of working through the recession in a low-paying Customer Service job, I decided to rekindle my passion for tech. I took the plunge and taught myself to program at age 29, blogging while learning. I was shocked at how effective online courses and videos were to my learning, and I flew through material in mere months that had previously caused me to give up.

In 2018, my brand, La Vie en Code (“Life in Code” in French) is a blog, podcast, and resource site—and I am currently in the process of beta testing my first online prep course for folks who want to learn to code, 30 Days to Web Development (30daystowebdevelopment.com). I’m finally doing everything I love, overcoming some really massive challenges and fears in my life in the process. It’s freed me!

FUN FACT: My emotional support animal is a tortoiseshell cat named Paul, a reference to an episode in the early seasons of Family Guy. 🙂

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
This year has been the year of strong, brave, outspoken women. The women doing what they want to do, how they want to do it, and who make no apologies or justifications for themselves. I’ve met so many this year in particular, and it’s given me the new ability to take risks I never would have otherwise considered.

Favorite video games?
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Stardew Valley, World of Warcraft, Mario Kart Deluxe 8

Song that makes you want to dance:
SO MANY. But lately:

Jasmine Sullivan “Masterpiece (Mona Lisa)”
Rihanna/SZA “Consideration”
Kari Faux “Gotta Know”

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
When I lost my customer service job in 2015, I had to decide if I was going to continue working in a field with very few opportunities for advancement in the direction I wanted. Ultimately, I decided that I trusted online resources and my own abilities enough to try to change careers on my own. It was the scariest, most daring decision I’ve made in my life.

A year later, when I had to decide what I was going to do with my career, I decided that I wanted to buck the corporate working world model and venture out on my own. Putting more energy and time into my brand, La Vie en Code, and creating my first online course has been a bigger challenge than I ever thought it would be. But I’ve grown so much from the experience, and learned so much about myself in the process. I know I will look back at this time by next year and be amazed with how much progress I’ve made.
