Women Who Reign: Brittany Reedman

“It’s better to look back on life and say, “I can’t believe I did that” than to look back and say, “I wish I did that.” – unknown

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I am a computer science and applied mathematics double major at The College of New Jersey. I spent the last two summers as a software engineering intern at Microsoft and will be starting as a software engineer at Facebook in August. Software engineering is one of my passions but I love exploring other ones by playing on my school’s varsity tennis team, attending concerts and music festivals, and traveling.

Favorite website / app:
Youtube because it allows me to explore new ideas and interests. It made me interested in makeup, fueled my to my obsession with Rubik’s Cubes, introduced me to new music, and so much more.

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
My mom graduated college with a degree in computer science in 1978 back before tech was glamorous and there were initiatives to get women involved in programming. Throughout my life she always encouraged me and my interest in becoming a software engineer. In a time when intelligent people were only told to “become a doctor” by every relative, guidance counselor, etc, she pursued her interest in engineering and did not let anyone dissuade her.

Song that makes you want to dance:
Even in my 70s I’ll still be that girl who dances uncontrollably to “Mr. Brightside” at a party

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
I come from a very tight knit Italian family where everyone lives in New Jersey or New York. Despite this, I still am choosing to do what is best for my career and move to Seattle to work as a software engineer. It was definitely one of the scariest decisions I’ve ever had to made, but now that it has been made, I am so excited to move and see where life takes me.

Ideal Job:
I see myself either making an strong impact on a company both through my technical and leadership abilities or in graduate school

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Take risks now because the longer you wait and the older you get, the less likely you are to take that risky step you’ve always been tempted to take! Put yourself out there because life opens up when you do. Apply for scholarships, attend conferences, find your dream job, build a strong network of badass women in tech who inspire you. Coming from a small state college in New Jersey, too many people are afraid to pursue their dream career because they count themselves out of the race before they’ve even entered it. Never take that approach because the worst thing that can happen is you are told no, leaving you in the exact same spot as you are in already. More likely than not, you’ll benefit in some way either by achieving what you intended to or at least learning something new that will help you in the future.
